Famous notables throughout history who have a connection to Litchfield include:

Judge Tapping Reeve who founded the first law school in the United States in Litchfield in 1773. The one-room school house was attended by two vice presidents, including Aaron Burr and still exists today as a museum.

Ethan Allen, an American Revolutionary war patriot of the Green Mountain Boys was born here in 1738.

Benjamin Tallmadge who was George Washington’s Chief of Espionage, during the Revolutionary War, resided in Litchfield and is buried there.

Sarah Pierce started the Litchfield Female Academy in 1792 which was the first all-female private school in the United States

Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin was born here in 1811
The famous Litchfield green is located in the center of town within a local and National Registered Historic District. Numerous events are held there throughout the year, including the town’s annual Memorial Day Service and Litchfield Hills Road Race.
Numerous war memorials are present on the green along with a Civil War cannon.
The First Congregational Church of Litchfield, located across the street from the green, is said to be one of the most photographed churches in the country.
The largest natural lake in Connecticut, Bantam Lake, is located partially in the town of Litchfield. Much of its perimeter is owned by the 4,000 acre White Memorial Foundation, a conservation area with miles of rivers and hiking trails.
300th anniversary | Litchfield is celebrating its 300th birthday this year after being incorporated as a town in 1719…a celebration was held on the exact day of the birthday, May 19th, and was attended by governor Ned Lamont and US Senator Richard Blumenthal. The event was held on the famous Litchfield Green

Union Savings Bank is located just off the green. It’s attached to a former minimum correctional facility (The Litchfield Jail) which at the time was described by Ripley’s Believe it or Not as the only bank attached to a jail in the United States.
